What do I wear to a dance class?

At Studio A, we follow a dress code. Our instructors need to be able to see your body lines for corrections and to take your dancer to their fullest potentail. This also enhances our students learning abilities as they are able to dance without disruptions and give the full attention to the class. Students for all classes must have hair pulled back completely from their face. Come in active wear! Leotards, tights, tank tops, leggings are appropriate. Anything loose fitting should be left at home.

Dancers must wear the proper footwear in the class(es) they are enrolled in. If in a ballet class, dancers must wear the leather split sole shoe from our studio to match. Slipper like shoes are not permitted as the teacher can not see the form of the foot. New dancers can go barefoot until the proper shoes are ordered. Hip Hop dancers should wear a pair of tennis shoes until their shoes come in.

Jewelry including earrings, necklaces, bracelets are not allowed in any class.

How should I wear my hair to a dance class?

Dancers hair should be up and out of the face! When dancing you don't want your hair getting in the way and becoming a distraction. A high ponytail, ballerina bun, braid, etc is ideal for dance classes.

What is expected from a dancer in class?

Studio A Dancers are expected to participate and try their best at everything we do during in our alloted class times together. Our dancers always listen to the instructors and give undivided attention. We are all to be respectful to the other dancers in the room as well as the teachers.

Can I wear my own dance shoes?

We prefer our dancers to match on stage and during any company performances. Upon registering your dancer for classes, we will size them in their first class with us & order from our distribution company!

Can we watch our dancer during practices?

There are many reason we don't allow parents inside the dance room to watch while we are practicing. For starters, the younger dancers do much better by themselves as the child focuses better on the lesson and not on the parent. We've learned our dancers practice better with less people in the room. Dance is also about learning independence. You will see your dancer grow so much in confidence from their dance classes. If your child is feeling anxious about being in a class without you, you can help by explaining to your child ahead of time that you will be in the lobby waiting for them to be done with class.

For 2-3 year olds it is very normal to have tears the first couple weeks. Please do not worry! Going into the dance room without mom or dad can be intimidating at first for some young ones. They will get more comfortable as the weeks go by. If they are very upset and do not want to come in without you, you may come in and sit with your dancer. Whenever they are ready to join in, our instructors will help encourage them! We ask our Mini dance parents to not leave the facility during classes in case of emergency.

Parents can wait in the lobby during classes or you can come back for pickup once class is completed.

What's the difference in recital and competition dancing?

Focus

Competitive dancers focus on winning and achieving their goals, while non-competitive dancers typically focus on taking classes for fun. These dancers may truly enjoy dance but have other interests as well. Competitive dancers often spend a lot of time training, perfecting their technique, and preparing for competitions, while non-competitive dancers may take a more relaxed approach to their dancing.

Training

Competitive dancers typically receive more structured training than non-competitive dancers. They take classes several days a week, may take private lessons, and participate in a more intensive training program. Non-competitive dancers may also take classes but do so less frequently and with less intensity.

Choreography

Competitive dancers often perform choreographed dances that have been created specifically for competitions. These dances may be technically demanding and require precise execution. Non-competitive dancers work on technique and a choreographed dance to perform at the end of the year.

Performance

Competitive dancers are often judged on their performance and therefore need a strong stage presence and the ability to connect with the audience. Non-competitive dancers may perform at community events and the end-of-year recital. While strong stage presence and the ability to connect with the audience certainly enhance any performance, it is not a requirement when you are dancing in a non-competitive environment.

Pressure

Competitive dancers face a great deal of pressure to perform at their best during competitions. They may feel nervous or anxious and may be highly critical of their performance. Non-competitive dancers, on the other hand, may feel less pressure to perform perfectly and may be more forgiving of their own mistakes.

Competitive vs. Non-Competitive Dance: Can You See A Difference In Training?

If your dancer is interested in competing, one of the best ways to see the difference in training is at the end-of-the-year recital or showcase. Our recital is a specific night where only our dance company dancers perform; a mix of the various dances recreational and competitive dances from our studio. When you watch, you can see the difference more consistent training makes, and the impact regularly performing in front of audiences and judges makes on dancers. It is just a question of if it is right for your dancer and family.

Competitive and non-competitive dancers have different commitment levels and goals. While competitive dancers may focus more on winning and achieving their goals, non-competitive dancers focus more on enjoying the experience and expressing themselves through movement. Ultimately, whether you choose to dance competitively or non-competitively, the most important thing is to have fun and enjoy it.

Why should I dance?

Why do we dance?

People ask us why we dance… our answer is simply “Why not?”

The happiness that we feel in dance can’t be explained in words - it has to be felt.

Learning to dance doesn’t mean that your child ends up a professional dancer, but there are many benefits from learning to dance at a young age.

Dancing promotes confidence, self esteem, personal expression, and flexibility of the body and mind. It is a great way to connect your child to a supportive community and an appreciative audience.

Dance classes promote physical fitness as being fun and easy and are the catalyst to engage in fitness for a lifetime. Skills we teach can be transferred to many other areas of fitness and form an excellent foundation for life-long health.

Lifelong friendships are built through dance. Working on team, partner and solo performances ensures that bonds formed in the studio blossom and grow outside of dance classes.

Students learn discipline and focus and experience many challenges in their dance classes. They learn that it takes hard work and practice to achieve their dreams and goals.

Dancers create shape and movement through imagination and exploration, benefiting them across all aspects of life. You can always tell who the dancer is in the room by their posture and grace in movement.

Why are we so joyful about moving our bodies to a song we love? Why do we put ourselves through the physical fatigue just to call ourselves dancers? Why do we love it so?

We dance for many reasons. We dance for physical fitness. We dance for mental clarity. We dance for emotional stability. However there is something glorious about dancing that is more than just intangible. It can’t be explained, yet we all know it so well that we do not hesitate to tap our feet to the music as the mood takes us on a journey of emotions. However, the number one reason we dance is to have fun!

Why do we dance? Every answer will be different, and that as it should be. Perhaps the better question is, “Why should we not?”

How do I sign up for competition?

If your dancer becomes interested in our traveling dance team, please reach out to us! We would love to tell you more about it and see if it is the right fit for you!

Are classes cancelled for bad weather?

Studio A will not be in session if there is severe and life threatening weather. We do not want to risk any of our dancers or their families! If we ever cancel classes, a message will be sent in our Studio Chat on your app and will also be posted on Facebook. If you ever question if we are still having classes, please contact us!
